Product Development Technologist

Position Summary:
The Product Development Technologist will play a crucial role in planning and executing both developmental and non-developmental projects within the wire and cable technology sector, ensuring adherence to our APQP development process and quality system requirements. This position will also support the product development team by performing analytical testing, interpreting data, and generating detailed reports. Key responsibilities include applying critical thinking and sound decision-making, effectively managing projects, conducting comprehensive literature reviews, performing in-depth scientific investigations, and utilizing statistical analysis.  Additionally, the technologist will conduct tests, analyze results, compile detailed findings, and provide actionable, data-driven recommendations to support the product development team in making informed and strategic decisions.

 

DUTIES:
Product Development:

  • Managing, planning, coordination, and execution of product development projects from concept to completion.
  • Ensure adherence to the APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) development process and HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) targets.
  • Manage the qualification of new products and propose new or alternative raw materials.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement projects, ensuring they meet desired cost, performance, and timeline objectives.
  • Provide technical support to the Business Development, Sales and Quality teams, ensuring all technical inquiries are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Work closely with teams across QA, processing, business development, and production to ensure smooth and successful product launches.
  • Understand and interpret regulatory product standards (e.g., CSA, UL, ICEA) to ensure product and approvals meet necessary regulatory requirements.

 

Polymer Testing:

  • Develop and plan trials and tests for both small-scale and full production environments, utilizing statistical analysis.
  • Design tests to assess the performance, quality, and feasibility of new materials, products, and processes.
  • Perform analytical testing in accordance with established procedures and protocols, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of results.
  • Supervise plant trials, ensuring smooth coordination with relevant departments (production, processing, quality assurance) to meet trial objectives.
  • Monitor trial conditions and troubleshoot any issues that may arise during testing to ensure trial success. 
  • Analyze test results, applying statistical methods to interpret data and identify trends, correlations, and deviations.
  • Write detailed test reports, summarizing findings, and validating results and production processes
  • Work with external laboratories or certification bodies when required to conduct testing, validate testing results, or meet regulatory standards.

 

Administration:

  • Report activities and progress in a clear and concise manner, utilizing both written and oral communication.
  • Ensure that all reports are accurate, well-structured, and aligned with project objectives and timelines.
  • Maintain detailed and organized documentation of product formulations, process parameters, test results, and any modifications.
  • Act as a liaison with regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with relevant standards and regulations.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest material and product technologies, industry trends, and evolving standards.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum Community College Education in the Field of Polymer, Chemical, and Materials Engineering, Chemistry, and Applied Science - must
  • Bachelor's degree in Polymer Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Chemistry - preferred
  • Minimum 1 year of related experience
  • Previous experience in manufacturing and/or wire & cable - preferred 
  • Preferred experience in conducting tests and analyzing results using laboratory equipment such as FTIR, DSC, TGA, DMA, and Tensile testing.
  • Knowledge of polymer processing techniques, particularly extrusion is preferred.
  • Familiarity with polymer compounds and additives is preferred.
  • Experience with Minitab and Design of Experiments (DoE) is an asset.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective time management with the ability to stay focused and meet deadlines.
