Production Manager

POSITION SUMMARY: 

This position is accountable for all production operations and associated activities for Kanata Electronic Services business, including production project management, qualification, testing, planning, logistics, standardized processes, materials management, maintenance, HSE implementation, as well as external fabrication and other third party operations. The role manages 8-10 people, in a 4,000 square foot facility (with a move to a 6,000 square foot facility in late 2025)
Specifically, the Production Manager at Kanata owns the flawless execution of customer purchase orders via effective leadership, supervision of hourly employees, coordination of internal and external stakeholders, and efficient manufacturing processes/procedures and continuous improvement. From initial order intake, through to delivery, the Production Manager works with his/her direct Production team, and an internal cross-functional team on all aspects of fulfilling the contractual obligations of customer orders, with particular emphasis on critical electronic assembly manufacturing (general assembly and/or clean room assembly) and quality processes/procedures – all while maintaining an incident and injury free workplace.  
The Production Manager establishes expertise with relevant product design/constructions and testing equipment to support internal and external customers and represents Kanata as a technical expert and point of contact with customer’ technical project teams for open orders – overseeing status updates for live/open orders. Responsibilities also include customer solution development, and technical customer service as required.
This is a key leadership position for Kanata Electronic Services.

 

DUTIES:
Production Management & Supervision

•    Thoroughly review incoming purchase orders and plan production schedules to meet on time delivery metric. 
•    Conduct daily plant level DMP production huddles with team: establishing priorities, scheduling tasks and monitoring progress.
•    Develop and implement plans to reduce costs/waste, improve cycle time and on time delivery, improve efficiency and labour utilization, and other aspects of operational performance.
•    Integrate and commercialize new products, processes, and equipment into the plant.
•    Ensure tooling is available for all incoming orders, adding new equipment as necessary to increase capacity.
•    Communicate available plant loading to ensure full utilization of available capacity through accurate lead times.
•    Support stock checks for incoming RFQs and ensure material is available when production starts
•    Generate/modify drawings and manufacturing control reports (MCRs) for quoted assemblies (establishing procedures and documentation to direct production activities) 
•    Develop and implement capacity plans to respond to demand, including scheduling of hourly production technicians (standard hours vs overtime)
•    Ensure adherence to ISO 9001, and CSA N299 procedures and support the improvement of the system and quality results.
•    Daily supervision/management of production teams tasks, including but not limited to cutting, stripping, attaching connectors, shrinking, gold brazing, potting, continuity verification by cable ring out, pressure testing, soldering, etc.
•    Hands on assembly of products according to the applicable MCRs/MIs/drawings/specifications if/when necessary 
•    Ensure robust and systematic problem solving methods are utilized to resolve production problems and drive improvement efforts.
•    Support warehouse procedures to deliver World Class inventory accuracy.
•    Ensure production materials, supplies and consumables are ordered and delivered as required.
•    Ensure safe operation of equipment by following manufacturer’s instructions and completing preventive maintenance requirements.
•    Maintain plant and job supplies inventory in ERP.
•    Ensure adherence to operational practices, procedures, and standards.

 

Logistics
•    Production team owns receiving function, and coordinates shipping function with off-site Shipping team.
•    Oversee label generation for outgoing products as per PO requirements.
•    Oversee packaging and preparation of finished products for shipment, ensuring products are packaged well to ensure safe arrival.

 

Technical Project Support (Open Orders)
•    Interact with customer project teams regarding qualification and project status updates for open orders as required.
•    Interact with customers regarding incoming free-issue material as required.

 

Commercial Support
•    Review incoming RFQs, and provide input from production perspective, including labour estimates, lead times, concessions and queries.
•    Review and approve outgoing quotes/proposals and incoming customer purchase orders as per Nuclear quality N299 requirements (Production review)

 

Human Resources
•    Timesheet review/approval and coordination into payroll system (biweekly)
•    Oversee qualified operational training (Training/certifying individuals for IPC standards, gold brazing & for backshell tube bending) and coordinate requalification of team members for NASA certification every two years (soldering, crimping, ESA and polymerics)
•    Participate in employee communication meetings and ensure issues raised are corrected.
•    Performance appraisals and compensation administration for hourly and salaried staff

 

Quality, Health & Safety
•    Day-to-day implementation support and supervision of the HSE system to achieve IIF status; Individual ASAs and Haz IDs as required. 
•    Maintain an active role in the JHSC.
•    Ensure OHSA and legislative compliance.
•    Ensure 5S housekeeping standards are maintained and improved.
•    Support NCR Disposition Process
•    Ensure adherence to manufacturing process standards Quality System procedures. 

 

Other/Administrative 
•    Maintain historical records by filing accurate documents/drawings/MCRs on SharePoint
•    Maintain up-to-date order completion schedule for planning and forecasting purposes. 
•    Provide input into strategic and capital plans.

 

REQUIREMENTS:
-     Minimum Community college education.
-     Minimum 11 years of related experience. 
-    Strong leadership, supervisory and communication skills.
-    Extensive knowledge of production and safety management, occupational health and safety and employment standards legislation.
-    Knowledge of ISO9001/AS9100D/CSA N299.2/3/4 quality systems.
-    Knowledge of World Class manufacturing techniques such as Kaizen, Six Sigma, JIT, Lean, TQM, KanBan, COQ, ERP, etc.
-    Knowledge of IPC J-STD-001, IPC/WHMA-A-620 and/or NASA-STD-8739.4.
-    ESD awareness with respect to ANSI/ESD S20.20.

-    Previous experience using AutoCAD - preferred
